Bioscience
The bioscience industry within Yorkshire already employs more than 10,000 people and is one of the most exciting bioscience clusters within the UK.
Since 2003, the region has invested over £20 million in bioscience research and today has a strong knowledge base represented by several Centres of Research Excellence. There is an emerging community of entrepreneurial ventures, in particular small entrepreneurial drug discovery and development companies, many spun-out from the region's universities and formed through links between industry, the universities and hospitals.
The strengths of the cluster lie in oncology and photodynamic therapy, structural biology, plant science, tissue engineering, genomic medicine, reproductive biology, and drug delivery.
Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, has invested in the future of the bioscience sector in Yorkshire and Humnber by establishing specialist bodies and Centres of Industrial Collaboration (CIC's) >>>
Pharmaceutical Innovation CIC: The Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation (IPI), based at the University of Bradford, is a Centre of Excellence in pharmaceutical research, aimed at accelerating the drug delivery development process through the application of the latest experimental and computational techniques (www.ipi.brad.ac.uk).
Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering CIC: The Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Centre of Industrial Collaboration (BITE CIC) has been set up to help companies develop biomaterial products from inception to market, using multidisciplinary teams (www.bitecic.com).
The Bioscience Yorkshire Network: Yorkshire Forward’s Bioscience Yorkshire Network (www.bioscience-yorkshire.com) has been established to encourage and nurture the growth of Yorkshire and Humber’s Bioscience Cluster by creating a dynamic, interactive community with a foundation of strong academic excellence, evolutionary companies and supporting service companies.
The South Yorkshire Bioscience Enterprise Network (SYBEN): The South Yorkshire Bioscience Enterprise Network (www.syben.org.uk) is a joint public and private sector initiative, with the aim of strengthening existing bioscience activity within the region and stimulating further growth. Its long-term goal is the creation of high-technology opportunities in South Yorkshire through the commercialisation of bioscience research.
Bioscience York: Since its inception as a partnership between the City of York Council and the University of York in 1998, Science City York (www.sciencecityyork.org.uk) has become a successful initiative which aims to create an environment in which technology, skills and business can thrive.
Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP): CNAP (www.cnap.org.uk) is a research centre of the Department of Biology at the University of York. It is dedicated to undertake and commercialise world class research in the use of plants and microbes as economically viable cell factories for the manufacture of novel industrial products.
National Non-Food Crops Centre (NNFCC): The NNFCC's purpose (www.nnfcc.co.uk) is to provide a single, independent and authoritative source of information on the use and implementation of non-food crop products and technologies in the UK.
