Digital Industries

Since 1998, The Yorkshire and Humber region's digital sector has shown the largest relative employment growth compared with the other English regions outside London. The region has the fourth highest level of internet access and its telephone exchanges are all DSL enabled by to allow local businesses access broadband services.

Around 30% of the UK’s internet traffic flows through Leeds and around 5000 companies are active in software services and the development and support of bespoke applications. The region's leading web design companies supply a host of multinational companies, while Yorkshire is second only to London for UK film and TV production

Employment growth has been driven by development of new small businesses and growth in medium and large enterprises.

To ensure the continued growth of the sector, Yorkshire and Humber's regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, has established a number of Centres of Industrial Collaboration (CIC) >>>

Wireless Technologies CIC: A Yorkshire-based research centre which is leading the world in developing wireless communications was opened in July 2005.  MSCRC, the Mobile and Satellite Communications Research Centre (www.mscrc.net), based at the University of Bradford, is the key partner in Yorkshire Forward’s new Wireless Technologies Centre of Industrial Collaboration (www.wirelesscic.com).  Specific expertise is centred on:

Digital Print CIC: The Centre of Industrial Collaboration for Digital Print (www.cic-digitalprinting.com), is hosted by the Department of Colour and Polymer Chemistry at the University of Leeds, which is one of the leading centres in digital printing. The group at Leeds has accumulated a considerable amount of experience in the application of inkjet printing technology in a variety of high value-added products. Such high value-added products include food product safety monitoring, security labels and anti-counterfeit marks.

Design Futures Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC): To help businesses exploit the outstanding design and research talent within Yorkshire and Humber, Yorkshire Forward has established the Design Futures Centre of Industrial Collaboration. Based at Sheffield Hallam University, the Centre brings together some of the UK’s finest creative minds and innovative thinkers to identify new commercial opportunities and develop exciting product and packaging ideas.
