The Yorkshire and the Humber region is renowned as the country's leading food processing region and is home to some of the world’s most recognisable brands.
Over 200,000 people from the Yorkshire and Humber region are employed in the Food and Drink industry which is expected to boost output by 14.7% by 2015. At the same time, the market for ethnic food is growing at a rate of 15% per annum, while speciality foods is increasing by about 35%.
The food industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the UK and is increasingly reliant on science and technology to formulate new products, increase quality, improve processing techniques and take advantage of emerging technologies. To make sure the region remains at the forefront of the food and drink sector, a number of organisations and Centre's of Industrial Collaboration (CIC) have been established to represent the needs of the industry in Yorkshire >>>
Food Chain CIC: Yorkshire and the Humber have some of the most advanced scientific and technical resources anywhere in the world, and to help the food industry take greater advantage of them, Yorkshire Forward has established the Food Chain Centre of Industrial Collaboration in the Procter Department of Food Science at the University of Leeds (www.foodchaincic.com).
York Electronics Centre: University of York – designs, develops and produces innovative products to aid the cost-effective delivery of quality food products (www.yec.york.ac.uk). It has a multi-disciplinary problem solving team with outstanding practical industrial and scientific experience. They are specialists in test and measurement, embedded controllers and software development.
Central Science Laboratory (CSL): The Central Science Laboratory (CSL) employs approximately 650 staff and specialises in the sciences underpinning agriculture for sustainable crop production, environmental management and conservation and in food safety and quality (www.csl.gov.uk).
Yorkshire and Humber Regional Food Group (YHRFG): The YHRFG www.foodyorkshire.com/rfg/) is establishing itself as the centre for marketing and selling expertise for companies in the region and, although only recently set up it is already demonstrating real results, including introducing the Delicious Yorkshire branding for local produce. The Food Technology Advisory Service: The Food Technology Advisory Service (www.foodyorkshire.com/ftas/index.php), based in Tadcaster, has been set up by Yorkshire Forward to provide technical expertise to the region’s small and medium sized businesses fulfilling the need for basic hands-on technical support within the food industry.
