Healthcare Technologies

The healthcare sector provides 260,000 jobs across the region and health spending totals £5.2 billion.

The Healthcare Technologies Cluster is the latest cluster to be formed in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and was the result of a recommendation in a feasibility report commissioned by Yorkshire Forward in August 2004.  The report was entitled ‘Growing the Region’s Businesses with NHS investment’.

The report highlighted the potential of exploiting the massive purchasing power of region's NHS Trusts. Procurement was identified at around £1.4 billion in 2002-2003 with 28% of expenditure going to suppliers within the Yorkshire and Humber region.

The region boasts fifty six large hospitals, including the two largest teaching hospitals in Europe, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield and St James Hospital, Leeds.  The Royal Hallamshire hosts one of the largest centres of medical technology in the UK.

Organisations facilitating research, innovation and technology exploitation within the region include >>>
